The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals
& organisations concerned with the protection, promotion & support of breastfeeding worldwide.
WABA action is based on the Innocenti Declaration, the Ten Links for Nurturing the Future and the
Global Strategy for Infant & Young Child Feeding. WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF & an NGO
in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).

14. Research

These workshops provide an opportunity for participants to hear and discuss presentations of recent research by the researchers themselves. In most cases this research is still unpublished. The intention is not for these sessions to be complete or representative of anything, simply to be a forum of, by and for breastfeeding researchers!

I. Research within the Natural Science Paradigm 

Abstracts on original research will be presented by researchers on the following topics: methodological issues will be highlighted and time will be allocated for discussion and questions from the audience:

  • Formative research: a qualitative study to identify caregivers' beliefs - Kama Ateca, Ministry of Health, Fiji
  • The threat of modernisation to the old African breastfeeding culture - Gloria Okemuo, BAN, Nigeria
  • How to assess maternal infant interaction during breastfeeding? - Anna Hjelmstedt, RN, RM, Karolinska Institute, Sweden
  • A warning from the West: a study of some effects of frequent weighing of babies on breastfeeding women in UK - Magda Sachs, The Breastfeeding Network, UK
  • Learning from Vietnamese mothers with optimal breastfeeding practice - Dr. Quan Le Nga, Reproductive Health Information and Research Centre, Vietnam

III. Planning Breastfeeding Research: A Little Help from My Friends

This workshop will start off with a round table discussion of participants' research plans. Afterwards, participants who chose to do so can pair off and discuss their plans in more depth. Here's your chance to influence how important research in the planning gets implemented-or seek advice and help in plans of your own!

IV. Complementary feeding - Stina Almroth, India, Facilitator

Research and discussion regarding what complementary feeding is, how it should be done, and what programs and learning materials are already available.
